22 Jul Palmares Beach Awarded Blue Flag
PALMARES BEACH AWARDED PRESTIGIOUS BLUE FLAG CERTIFICATION IN PUERTO VALLARTA, MEXICO:
Playa Palmares is located 6 kilometers south of town, a 10-minue drive along Highway 200, just before Garza Blanca. Puerto Vallarta’s mayor Ramon Guerrero was pleased to announce that Puerto Vallarta’s beautiful Palmares Beach was just awarded an important and much anticipated Blue Flag. This is the first Blue Flag awarded in the state of Jalisco. The Blue Flag designation is an international environmental award for beaches and marinas that comply with very strict criteria for sustainable development practices to include water quality, environmental management, safety and services. Blue Flags are bestowed to a beach location after strict reviews by a panel of international environmentalists from the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). To earn a Blue Flag a beach must be in compliance with 32 regulations and criteria. Here is only a partial listing of what qualifications must be met: the beach must be clean, an adequate number of restroom facilities must be available and kept clean, containers for the separation of recyclable waste materials should be available at the beach, coral reefs in the vicinity must be monitored, access to the beach by dogs should be strictly controlled, the beach must fully comply with water quality sampling and frequency requirements, no industrial waste-water or sewage-related discharges, microbiological levels of E. coli bacteria and intestinal enterococci/streptococci must be in compliance with strict parameters, a map of the beach indicating different facilities must be displayed to include information about water quality, environmental education activities must be offered and promoted to beach users, an adequate number of lifeguards and/or lifesaving equipment must be available at the beach, first-aid equipment must be available on the beach, drinking fountains should be available, wheelchair access and accessibility features must be in place for at least one Blue Flag in each municipality.
Puerto Vallarta is currently readying itself to be the recipient of two additional Blue Flag certifications for the beaches of Holi and Mismaloya. Although other public beaches in Puerto Vallarta have not yet received this prestigious award, it’s important to know that they are most certainly safe for swimming and other recreational activities. All Blue Flags are awarded for one season at a time.
